I think you had to grow up in the 80s or earlier to completely realize how warped the minds of <30 year olds really is. I remember Too Wong Foo. It was a comedy, and very funny - Patrick Swayze dressed as a woman and an older, frumpy Rizzo from Grease bonding over how statuesque Julie Newmar was. I remember when Steven came out to his whole family on Dynasty in the early 80s - that was 40 years ago. One of the most popular bands when I grew up was Duran Duran - they all wore makeup. So did Poison and Motley Crew - hard rock bands with manly men wearing makeup. If there was a massive, conservative backlash back then, I was too young to remember it. Back then, gays and lesbians and even transvestites were accepted and didn't need "allies". Then after a few years of activism, they got the right to marry. That's when things pretty much went off the rails. Glenn Greenwald suggests instead of celebrating their win and going back to their regular lives, they just moved onto the next thing, and that was how the current trans movement came about. I think Glenn is a bit naive.
You express my thoughts better than I can!
